North Carolina Consortium on Natural Medicines

Herb Monographs, Consumer Information Sheets, and Grower's Guides

A team of physicians, pharmacists, health educators, and agricultural specialists has created a series of publications on medicinal herbs that can be grown, processed, and marketed in North Carolina. Each monograph comes in 3 versions; one is written for health professionals, the second is directed toward consumers, and the third is for commercial growers. The health professionals version includes detailed information on the biochemistry of the herb, safety and efficacy studies, known herb/drug interactions, and contra-indications. The consumer version includes basic history, uses, and precautions, as well as some information on how to grow the herb. The commercial grower version contains botany, active constituents, and marketing information, as well as uses of the herb.

These publications are provided for informational purposes only and reflect our consensus interpretation of published scientific literature that was available at the time of posting. The study of herbal medicines is a rapidly evolving field and new information may become available that is not present in the current posting of this monograph.Note that herbal remedies, even if used for thousands of years, have not been tested systematically for either effectiveness or safety and it is known that these factors can vary from one preparation to another. These agents may also possess unrecognized side effects and/or interact with drugs in ways that are not yet known. Therefore, it is urged that this information not be used to diagnose or treat any illness.Patients are strongly encouraged to consult a licensed health care professional regarding the addition of any herbal dietary supplement to their medical regimen.

Agricultural information is also changing rapidly. The GoldenLEAF project that supports these grower's guides has led to a new project in which sixteen North Carolina farmers are growing herbs on a large scale and selling them to six buyers interested in medicinal herbs from North Carolina. The information obtained from this new project will be used to update the production, harvesting, and marketing information contained in these guides.

The monographs and information sheets are available in both HTML and downloadable PDF versions; currently, the grower's guides are only available in PDF format.
